RECYCLING QUICK FACTS:

 

  • By recycling your newspaper everyday you save a 20 foot tree.
  • A ton of recycled paper (2000 pounds) can save 17 trees, 380 gallons of oil and 7000 gallons of water.
  • If each person were to reuse a paper shopping bag for just one trip to the store, we would save 60,000 trees.
  • Recycling a 4 foot stack of papers saves one 40 foot fir tree.
  • One tree filters up to 60 lbs. of pollutants from the air per year.
  • One ton of recycled paper saves 3700 lbs of lumber, 24,000 gallons of water, uses 64% less energy, 50% less water, 74% less air pollution, saves 17 trees and creates 5 times more jobs.
  • It takes 75,000 trees to print a Sunday Edition of the NY Times.

Paper Recycling - a few quick facts

• 86 percent of Americans have access to curbside or drop-off paper recycling programs.

• Every ton of paper recovered saves 3.3 cubic yards of landfill space.

• Over the past five years, more paper has been recycled than has been sent to landfills.

• By weight more paper is recovered for recycling from municipal solid waste streams than glass, plastic and aluminum combined.

• More than 37 percent of the raw material used to make new paper products comes from recycled paper.

• Nearly 80 percent of all U.S. papermakers use some recovered paper to make everything from newspaper to paperboard packaging to office paper.
